Gibbs & Main Chamber Players

Founded in 2002 by Karine Stone and Diego Garcia and formerly known as Quartsemble, Gibbs & Main is an innovative chamber music ensemble based in Rochester, New York. The group, comprised of five professional musicians, performs classical masterpieces side by side with Latin music and more contemporary repertoire in both traditional and unexpected settings. Gibbs & Main is known for its interactive educational concerts for children and adults, often performing in schools, churches, and libraries, as well as restaurants, art galleries, and parks, bringing high-caliber performances to a wide range of audiences.

About the Artists

Karine StoneViolinist Karine Stone is an active recitalist, chamber musician, teacher, conductor and arts administrator. An experienced orchestral musician as well, Ms. Stone was a member of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra from 1998–2001. Ms. Stone has performed as Acting Concertmaster of the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra, in the first violins of the Santo Domingo Music Festival, the Todi Music Festival, and the Skaneateles Festival, and as Principal Second of the Rochester Oratorio Society. Currently, she teaches violin and viola at the Rochester Institute of Technology and is Concertmaster of the RIT Orchestra. She performs frequently in the second violins of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and was the first violinist of the RPO Educational Quintet from 2002–2005. Ms. Stone is on the faculty of the Eastman Community Music School, where she is the founder and conductor of the Kaleidoscope Orchestra, and music director of the Eastman Youth String Orchestra. She holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music.

 

Anyango Yarbo-DavenportViolinist Anyango Yarbo-Davenport was born and raised in Munich, Germany as the daughter of African American soprano Africa Yarbo-Davenport and the late Austrian conductor Hans Peter Jillich. She was trained at the music academies of Munich, Germany and began her undergraduate studies at the University of Salzburg ‘Mozarteum’, Austria. In 2005, Anyango received a full- scholarship from the Eastman School of Music to study in the master class of Prof. Charles Castleman. Fall of 2006 she made her solo debut at Eastman with Schnittke’s Concerto Grosso No.1. She received the coveted Performer’s Certificate with her Bachelor’s degree in 2008 from Eastman, where she is currently pursuing her Master’s degree. Most recently, Anyango won the 1st Prize of the 2010 American Protégé International Competition and will perform on March 14th in Carnegie’s Weill Hall. Anyango’s solo performances can be heard regularly in concert halls worldwide such as the Schloss Leopoldskron in Austria, the Munich Philharmonic in Germany, the Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, and the Detroit Orchestra Hall - among many others. As a multiple prizewinner of international competitions her performances have been broadcasted by PBS TV & Radio, WXXI, and NBC in the US, UK and Austria, receiving rave reviews. Anyango is a teaching assistant at Eastman and Eastman’s Community Music School and conducts the Green Strings ensemble since 2008. She is dedicated to the musical education of underprivileged and handicapped children and collaborates with non-profit organizations for equal opportunity.

 

Marc AndersonViolist Marc Anderson enjoys a versatile career as an orchestral violist, chamber musician and teacher. Mr. Anderson has been with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra since 2005 and is a member of the RPO Educational Quintet. An avid chamber musician, Mr. Anderson frequently collaborates with his RPO colleagues in many of the area's classical concert series, such as the Skaneateles Music Festival, Chamber Music Rochester and First Muse. Mr. Anderson holds both Bachelors and Masters performance degrees from the Eastman School of Music, where he was the recipient of the coveted Performers Certificate. Mr. Anderson currently teaches on the string faculty of Roberts Wesleyan College and the Eastman Community Music School.

 

Diego GarciaCellist Diego Garcia has been on the cello and conducting faculty of the Eastman Community Music School since 2004. Currently the Music Director of the Eastman Youth Chamber Soloists and of the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Garcia is also a frequent guest conductor of both youth orchestras and professional orchestras throughout the United States. A prize-winner in the Carolina Oramas Competition, Mr. Garcia has been featured in numerous solo and chamber music performances in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and throughout South America and Europe. He has performed as Assistant Principal Cellist in the Santo Domingo Music Festival in 2001 and 2003, and as Principal Cellist of the Todi Music Festival in 2007. Most recently, Mr. Garcia composed the original film score for “The Heart of Tango,” which was performed by Gibbs & Main. Mr. Garcia holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, and received conducting fellowships to the Conductor’s Institute at Bard College in 2005 and 2006.

 

Gaelen McCormickBassist Gaelen McCormick has been a member of the Rochester Philharmonic’s bass section since 1995. Before joining the RPO, she held positions with regional orchestras such as the Erie (PA) Philharmonic, the Binghamton Philharmonic and the Albany Symphony. Ms. McCormick recently became a founding member of the Pittsburgh Live Music Chamber Orchestra and performed with them during their inaugural season. She is a frequent guest at chamber music festivals throughout the U.S., such as the Roycroft Chamber Music Festival and the Syracuse New Music Ensemble. Ms. McCormick has been a member of Gibbs & Main for three years and a member of the RPO’s Education Quintet since 2000. In recent summers, she has been performing with the Music in the Mountains chamber orchestra, a festival based in Durango, Colorado. She is on the bass faculty of the Eastman Community Music School and Roberts Wesleyan College. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Bass Performance and Literature from the Eastman School and a Master’s Degree in Bass Performance from Carnegie Mellon University.
