Kidsemble is a unique interactive introduction to chamber music for children in grades K-6 and their families. In a Kidsemble workshop, children meet the musicians and try out "petting zoo" instruments in small sizes. It's an enjoyable way for them to learn about stringed instruments from the inside out — and then they actually build their own, playable instruments. With our help and their inspiration, children have made PVC clarinets, tube trombones, claves and more!

Each workshop features a guest artist and one specific genre of music. At the end of the session, children participate in an ensemble performance with Gibbs & Main. Led by the enthusiastic members of Gibbs & Main, Kidsemble has been kid-tested in numerous performances throughout the region. Check out our video and see how much fun music education can be.

Kidsemble is the brainchild of Gibbs and Main's Karine Stone and Terry Fonda Smith, the Head of the Lower School at The Harley School and the founder and director of the Bebop to Bach Family Concert Series in Rochester. Prior to diving into administration, Terry was a member of the music faculty for 13 years at The Harley School where she taught general and instrumental music, and specialized most recently in preschool music and creative arts. Terry has two master's degrees (in oboe performance and music education), one PhD (in music education), and two sons, 9 and 6, who serve to remind her how vital creativity, flexibility and improvisation are in all aspects of life.
